Put a ring on it...
When I was planning my wedding, my grandma told me this hilarious story of when she was engaged. After my grandpa proposed she went home to show her father the ring. She said he grabbed her hand and took her outside to look at it. When she asked why they needed to go outside to look at the ring he replied, "I needed to come out into the sunshine so I could see that tiny thing." I couldn't even imagine what her reaction was like. He told her to give it back and tell my grandpa she needed a bigger ring. Can you believe it? My grandma actually told my grandpa what her father said and he bought her a bigger ring. Way to put a ring on it Grandpa.

Eat your rice
I made rice as a side dish with dinner the other night and I made a comment that my grandpa always told my cousins and I. He always told us to eat our rice. Rice at my grandparent's house is always on the menu. I don't think I've ever had a meal at my grandparent's house that didn't have rice available, except for Saturday night spaghetti. Not to mention, the rice should always be on the right side of your plate, to make it easy to scoop up with your fork.
I had told my husband, make sure you eat all your rice, so you don't get beriberi. He looked at me like I was crazy and then I realized I'm sure not too many people have heard of beriberi or had ever heard a comment of that sort when it comes to rice. He thought I had made it up. I told him, my grandpa always told us we would get beriberi or rickets if we didn't eat our rice. After a good laugh and convincing that I didn't make it up, I decided to look up the definition.
Beriberi actually doesn't come from not eating rice, but from eating only polished white rice and nothing else. Apparently it's a disease where the body has a thiamine deficiency and it affects the nervous system. Rickets on the other hand has nothing to do with eating rice. The predominant cause of Rickets is from a Vitamin D deficiency.
Regardless if the diseases that we can get from not eating our rice aren't necessarily true, I will still continue to say, "You better eat your rice, so you don't get beriberi."
